The vision
In 1997, Yiannis and Rita Kirligitsis made a life-changing decision, relocating with their two young sons to the unfamiliar village of Ano Pedina in search of a better life. They rented one of the few guesthouses in the Zagori region at that time, becoming among the first hosts to welcome curious visitors to this yet-to-be-explored Hellenic mountain range.
After years of hard work and falling in love with their unspoiled paradise, the idea of creating something of their own began to take root in their minds. This vision was manifested in an old, sleeping red aristocrat at the heart of the village. Thus the conception of Porfyron was born.
The Tale of the Red Aristocrat
Constructed in 1850 by an affluent family, initially intended as the residence for the village doctor, and later in the 20th century, transformed into a private mansion for the descendants of the original owner. During this period, the building acquired its distinctive red color, symbolizing the family’s status and importance.
As the village population dwindled after the Second World War, the structure stood vacant. Consequently, it was generously donated and promptly repurposed into a girls’ dormitory, catering to the accommodation needs of the students attending the Labriadios weaving school, also situated in Ano Pedina. This function persisted until 1980 when the new boarding school was completed, leading to the relocation of students. Left abandoned thereafter, it gradually succumbed to decay until the new coming Kirligitsis family purchased it in 2000.

A daring Renovation
Fully recognizing the architectural significance and unique character of the mansion, a substantial renovation was undertaken with the sole aim of rescuing the main building from impending collapse. After a nerve-wracking six-year marathon, we successfully supported and strengthened the main structure of the building, preserving it and granting it a second life.
Throughout the comprehensive renovation of the residence, we ensured that the main entrance, as well as the ceilings, stairs, and fireplaces, were preserved in their original state. Complemented by the colors of the garden, the synergy of natural textures, and the rhythm of the interior spaces, we restored the full glory to this once-forgotten aristocrat.
Honest Hospitality
Our unwavering passion and deep understanding of hospitality have been the defining elements of our presence in the Zagori throughout the years. Our profound love and respect for the mountains and the culture are integral to our identity, reflected in the naming of each of our rooms after a surrounding peak in the area. We open the door to our home, trusting that you will appreciate and respect this beautiful place, just as we did when we first discovered it.
The genuine, authentic moments and carefree pleasures that we can share here together, makes this place truly magical.
