Filled apples (Milo krasato)

A nice dessert we make with our own apples; use stewing pears or apples that keep their shape when cooked: a simple, healthy sweeet, guaranteed to please everyone

1 kg small apples or stewing pears (10-15 pieces)

10-15 prunes

1 bottle red wine (dry)

400 g sugar

3-4 cinnamon sticks

20 cloves

1 piece of lemon or orange peel

Peel and core the apples and stuff a prune in each apple. Place them in a large pan. Sprinkle the sugar over the apples and cover with the red wine. Insert the cinnamon sticks here and there in between the apples and scatter the cloves over the fruit. A piece of lemon or orange peel is a nice addition, but not strictly necessary.

Bring the contents of the pan to a boil and allow to simmer ½ hour until the apples are cooked through but not mushy. Remove them from the pan and allow the syrup to reduce somewhat. Serve the apples warm or cold, drizzled with some of the syrup.
